Tragic Shooting Claims Life of Kansas Representative’s Intern
An intern for Republican Kansas Representative Ron Estes was fatally shot in Washington, D.C. on Monday night, as announced by his office.
Eric Tarpinian Yachim, a senior at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst majoring in finance with minors in political science, had recently been serving as a legislative intern over the summer and had previously worked as a senior advocate earlier this year.
At just 21 years old, Tarpinian Yachim was caught in a shooting incident near the Mount Vernon Square Metro station when a suspect fired at a group of individuals. It appears he wasn’t specifically targeted, according to police reports.
Estes expressed his sorrow, recalling, “I remember his kindness and how he always welcomed everyone who came into our office with a cheerful smile. I’m grateful to Eric for serving Kansas’ fourth district and the nation. Please pray for Susan and me in this heartbreaking time, and respect their privacy.”
Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith shared with NBC4 that the investigation is ongoing. She noted, “It’s a tragic loss for young people in our community and reflects something profound for most of them.”
As of Wednesday, law enforcement officials had located the vehicle used in the shooting and were actively searching for the suspects.
This incident comes amid ongoing worries regarding crime in Washington, D.C. Statistics have shown that a significant proportion of individuals arrested for carrying unlicensed firearms were sentenced between 2018 and 2022, according to data from the DC Judgment Committee obtained by the Heritage Foundation. Law enforcement reported recovering nearly 2,900 firearms in the district in 2024.
Though Congress holds ultimate legislative authority over Washington, D.C., it has delegated many responsibilities to local governments.
