Verstappen Addresses Mercedes Speculation Ahead of UK Grand Prix

Max Verstappen has faced numerous questions regarding potential surprising moves to Mercedes for the 2026 Formula 1 season as the UK Grand Prix approaches this weekend.

During a media session at Silverstone on Thursday, the Red Bull driver stated, “There’s nothing to add,” expressing his unease about the ongoing rumors and their impact on headlines.

He reiterated, “I have nothing to add,” emphasizing that while others may write about speculations, it doesn’t concern him directly. In recent weeks, rumors surrounding a possible shift to Mercedes have circulated throughout the paddock, gaining momentum particularly in the last 48 hours, with some reports suggesting Verstappen could be headed there.

In an attempt to quell the chatter during the media briefing, Verstappen responded to a question about driving for another team with caution. “I’m going to say no because when I say yes, people make headlines again. That’s not what I want,” he explained.

Verstappen shared his dream of finishing his career with a single team, highlighting the importance of team loyalty. “I’ve always said it was ideal for the team. They think the same way, to end my career in Formula 1 on one team,” he expressed, which he believes is a remarkable goal to pursue.

One of the most interesting aspects of Verstappen’s comments was his acknowledgement of the challenges in always being in the fastest cars. The speculation about a move to Mercedes seems to stem from the belief that the team might have a competitive edge starting next season due to new technical regulations set to alter the landscape of Formula 1.

These upcoming regulations will change the power unit dynamics, introducing a mix of internal combustion engines and electric power. There has been ongoing talk in the paddock that the introduction of turbocharged power units could position Mercedes well, referencing their past successes since 2014.

Despite the speculation, Verstappen highlighted the unpredictability of performance in F1. “In Formula 1, it’s just hard to try to be in the fastest car all the time, because you have to look into the future. Who knew this was the case two years ago?” he mused.

He reflected on the current situation, stating, “I think the only focus I have at the moment is trying to improve the situation. We’re not where we want to be, that’s very clear, but at the same time, a lot of changes are coming next year, so trying to chase the fastest cars right now may not yield the same results next season.”

“That’s exactly what Formula 1 is about. Good luck. I’ll win three, four, six titles.” His thoughts underscored the complexities of the driver market, especially given Verstappen’s status as one of the top talents on the grid, which only fuels ongoing speculation.

Regardless of his efforts to downplay the rumors, the conversation around his potential move continues.
