Measles Cases on the Rise in Kentucky

Kentucky is experiencing its first measles outbreak of 2025, as nationwide cases are nearing a nearly 30-year peak.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been 1,267 confirmed measles cases in the U.S. this year. Recently, Texas reported three additional cases linked to a significant outbreak that has persisted throughout late winter and into spring.

Moreover, there are three other notable outbreaks occurring in North America. The longest outbreak is happening in Ontario, Canada, where 2,212 cases were reported from mid-October until June 24. Tragically, the province recorded its first death from this outbreak on June 5, involving a baby with congenital measles along with preexisting conditions.

In Alberta, Canada, the situation is also serious, with 1,169 confirmed cases as of Wednesday. Meanwhile, in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, authorities reported 2,810 cases along with eight fatalities.

In the U.S., several states are currently noted for active outbreaks, defined by the CDC as having three or more related cases. States such as Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Utah have all seen recent activity.

This year, measles has taken lives in the U.S. Two elementary school-aged children in West Texas, where a significant outbreak has transpired, and one adult in New Mexico, all of whom were unvaccinated, have died.

Kentucky itself is dealing with an outbreak that includes four confirmed cases, reported by the state on Monday. These cases are located in Fayette County, which includes Lexington, and nearby Woodford County, bringing the total to seven cases confirmed in the state this year.

Measles, a highly contagious airborne virus, spreads easily through coughs, sneezes, or even just breathing. It remains preventable by vaccination and was declared eliminated from the U.S. in the year 2000.
