Adams Sticks with Scandal-Plagued Allies Amid Reelection Challenges

Amid ongoing scrutiny, Mayor Eric Adams appears unwilling to distance himself from his controversial associates who have shadowed his administration. Sources suggest that Adams has maintained connections with individuals involved in a corruption investigation during his campaign for reelection.

Insiders reveal that Ingrid Lewis Martin, a former top advisor, has been quietly involved in rallying support for Adams’ campaign. Additionally, other key figures like Winnie Greco and Brianna Suggs, both of whom have ties to past legal issues, are still backing his efforts, despite the federal probes that have surrounded his administration.

“It’s astonishing,” remarked one source when hearing about the return of these figures to Adams’ orbit, hinting at the mixed feelings within his camp. Some significant supporters are reportedly frustrated by these connections, given the upcoming election against Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani.

Despite concerns raised about Lewis Martin and Greco, the campaign isn’t backing down. They are said to be involved as volunteers, while Suggs remains cautiously on the payroll amidst the ongoing investigations. Spokesperson Todd Shapiro emphasized that these individuals, while controversial, are merely volunteers in the broader campaign context.

Adams, who identifies as a Democrat, faces a tough reelection battle not just against Mamdani but also against Republican Curtis Sliwa and independent candidate Jim Walden. Business leaders, worried about the election’s implications, are seeing Adams as a viable option after previous candidates struggled in the primaries.

There are whispers that Adams might need to reconsider his relationships if he wants to solidify his chances for reelection. He has, in the past, acknowledged some questionable hiring decisions from his first term. Yet, it seems he remains reluctant to cut ties with friends and supporters entangled in controversy.

One source remarked that Adams’ loyalty is evident: “He seems drawn to those who have been with him through thick and thin.” Interestingly, another insider noted the contradictions within his circle, suggesting that voices of caution don’t seem to sway him as readily.

Past Shadows Reemerge

Lewis Martin stepped down from a significant role in December, shortly before being implicated in a bribery scheme tied to two New York City hotel owners. Despite the accusations, she deflects blame. Her resignation came at a challenging time for Adams, as he faced increasing scrutiny over his administration’s ties to individuals under investigation.

Lewis Martin, often referred to as a close confidant of the mayor, has resumed her support for the campaign despite the allegations hanging over her. “She’s practically his behind-the-scenes operator,” one source noted.

As Shapiro downplays her current involvement, stressing her long history with Adams, Suggs also reemerges in the campaign spotlight despite not being charged in relation to her previous connections. She recently participated alongside Greco, another former aide facing scrutiny.

Concerns loom over the possible split of votes if Cuomo decides to run independently in the general election, as he shapes his narrative to appear as a formidable opponent against Mamdani. His past may come into play here, given losses in his political career.

Billionaire investor Bill Ackman voiced his support for Adams, suggesting that Cuomo should step aside for the greater good, affirming the belief that, despite some hurdles, Adams had a largely successful first term.
