Yankees fans can always count on Greg Giannotti to defend them.
During a recent episode of “Boomer & Gio” on WFAN, he responded to Jeff Passan’s remarks about Yankee fans, who claimed that ESPN insiders were weary of their complaints.
“This is your typical Kansas City perspective,” Giannotti said. “He might understand baseball, but it’s clear he doesn’t fully get Yankee fans.”
“There’s an expectation here. I mean, if you haven’t won the World Series since 2009, and you’re a Yankee fan, you’d be frustrated—right? It’s not like they haven’t been through a drought until last year.”
He continued, noting, “These fans grew up during the Yankees’ dynasties in the late ’90s and early 2000s. That’s what they know.”
Co-host Boomer Esiason added that Passan probably doesn’t know the thrill of rooting for a consistently winning team, given his Kansas City roots.
Though now residing in Kansas City as a Chiefs supporter, Passan hails from the Cleveland suburbs.
The original comments by Passan were made on “The Max Manis Podcast,” where he suggested Yankees fans shouldn’t have an all-or-nothing mentality regarding championships.
“That’s why I say to Yankees fans, ‘Close F-K Up’ when they complain,” Passan remarked in an episode aired Tuesday. “Would you rather have a team that competes every year or one that’s just awful?”
As for the current season, despite a strong start in 2025, the Yankees are now tied with the Blue Jays for the top spot in the AL East, with the Rays not far behind at only half a game back.
