Alaska is humorously proposing the idea of “Bear Alcatraz” to assist the Trump administration in managing illegal immigration detention.
This suggestion came just days after Florida announced plans for a large new immigration detention facility named “Crocodile Alcatraz,” designed to accommodate many illegal immigrants.
“We may not have crocodiles, but we’ve got plenty of bears,” Alaska remarked during an appearance on Fox News’ “Ingraham Angle.”
Despite this playful banter, the state, which supported President Trump in the 2024 election with 55% of the vote, clarified that there is no actual plan for this “Alaskan version of Crocodile Alcatraz.”
This discussion was sparked by White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, who urged Republican governors to establish similar facilities to help the administration address illegal immigration more effectively.
“If you’re watching tonight, all you Red State governors: pick up the phone, call DHS, and collaborate with us to build facilities in your state for detaining illegals and criminals,” he urged.
Florida’s Attorney General James Usmierer initiated this effort last month by proposing the construction of the new detention center, which is expected to be surrounded by crocodiles and other security measures.
A sign marking the entrance to “Alligator Alcatraz” will be installed at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Facility soon, as preparations are underway.
On July 1, 2025, President Trump, alongside Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem, is scheduled to tour the new immigration detention site in Florida.
“The government has tasked state leaders with locating new temporary detention facilities,” the attorney general had previously stated.
“I believe this is the way to go. I’m dubbing it Crocodile Alcatraz,” he added.
“Crocodile Alcatraz, we’re all set,” he concluded.
