A warm spring day is quickly giving way to summer, with temperatures rising and the sun beaming down. But, summer in the city doesn’t have to mean just sweating it out in the subway or standing in long lines for ice cream. This is when NYC truly comes alive.
There are plenty of budget-friendly parks and unique urban spaces that offer exciting summer activities. Here are some must-try events to put on your summer agenda.
Bolschbert Fest
The Bolschbert Fest celebrates the iconic Catskill community, once a favorite summer spot for Jewish vacationers. This year’s festival honors the golden age of comedy, featuring Robert Klein receiving a lifetime achievement award. Klein, who spent many summers in the area, recalls his youthful experiences at local hotels and resorts.
“I was a lifeguard and then a busboy. There was definitely some romance in the air,” he joked recently. His fond memories of growing up in this environment have stuck with him.
Klein’s experience as a budding stand-up comedian has influenced many, even returning to the Catskills to re-engage with the rich culture that shaped him.
“It’s incredible how many comedians from that era have had an impact—not just on me, but on the whole landscape of comedy,” he remarked.
The festival runs on July 26th and 27th in Ellenville, with tickets priced between $25 and $40; find out more at www.borschtbeltfest.org.
Bat Night Walk
On July 31st, the Gotham Bat Conservancy is hosting a Bat Walk at Marine Park in Brooklyn. Participants can explore the habitat of nine native bat species, guided by experts.
Contrary to the creepy perceptions, bats are beneficial for the environment, as they mainly feed on insects. Expect to see Eastern Red and big brown bats, among others, on this unique evening.
Registration for the free event is required and can be done online.
Butterfly Garden in Central Park
During the summer months, Central Park is teeming with activity. Yet, there’s something special to explore—the North Meadow Butterfly Garden. Visitors can join guided tours and see a vibrant display of butterflies, particularly the Monarch.
Scheduled tours are available on July 21st, 24th, and 26th, so make sure to reserve your spot online.
East River Tennis Court
Great news for all tennis players! The East River Tennis Court at John V. Lindsay Park has reopened after renovations, now featuring brand new courts available daily from dawn until dusk. The location offers not only tennis facilities but also scenic views of the skyline.
Met Rooftop Garden
Visitors can enjoy a final exhibition at the Met Rooftop Garden before renovations commence. Jenny C. Jones’ installation titled “Ensemble” integrates minimalism with sound to honor the legacy of black improvisation and avant-garde music.
The exhibition runs until October and is included with museum admission.
Dining with a View
Why settle for crowded rooftop bars? Located on the 47th floor, the revolving restaurant at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square offers stunning views alongside dining. Recently revamped by Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group, diners can enjoy various dishes while soaking in the skyline change as the sun sets.
Reservations are recommended, but walk-ins are also welcome for those hoping to grab some small plates or cocktails.
Sprinkler Fest
For some enjoyable family fun, head to Snug Harbor’s SprinklerFest on July 18th. This free event is perfect for cooling off, featuring sprinklers, local music, and summer snacks. Just a ferry ride away, it also boasts a beautiful botanical garden.
Charlie Parker Jazz Festival
From August 22nd to 24th, music lovers can gather at the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival, showcasing both new talents and jazz legends. The festival, held in various parks, is free and open to everyone, making it accessible for all to enjoy this vibrant genre of music.
Group Retreat
Experience “glamping” with Collective Retreats on Governors Island. With luxurious tents and health-oriented activities, guests can unwind and enjoy the tranquility just a short ferry ride from Manhattan.
iFly Queens
If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, iFly in Long Island City offers indoor skydiving. Set to officially open on July 19th, it promises a thrilling experience for ages three and up with vertical wind tunnels.
