Gavin Newsom’s Potential Presidential Bid in 2028
California Governor Gavin Newsom is exploring a presidential run in 2028 and will visit South Carolina next week, aiming to connect with impoverished Black voters in the region.
According to South Carolina Democrats, Newsom’s visit will involve discussions with voters from an economically challenged county on Tuesday and Wednesday. He plans to focus on the common struggles related to natural disasters. Yet, it’s worth noting that his own state has faced criticism over disaster management, including issues like leaving the state during a significant snowstorm and failing to provide water during wildfires.
Reports indicate that South Carolina Democrats announced the trip as a chance to engage with communities discussing the urgent need for federal support following disasters, such as the wildfires exacerbated by Hurricane Helen and events in Los Angeles.
Earlier in 2024, Newsom campaigned in South Carolina for the presidential elections of former President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. His reception was somewhat lukewarm, with voters expressing skepticism about his liberal credentials.
South Carolina played a pivotal role in Biden’s nomination in 2020. While he struggled in Iowa and New Hampshire, support from influential figures like Rep. Jim Clyburn was crucial. The state’s backing from Black voters had a significant impact, leading other candidates to exit the race. In 2024, the Democrats designated South Carolina as the first state in their primary cycle.
Newsom may be targeting low-income Black voters in South Carolina, although aides have suggested that his visit is primarily aimed at supporting the Democratic campaign ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
However, it’s important to note that currently, South Carolina lacks competitive council districts, and the political landscape is being closely monitored.
