Joey Chestnut Triumphs at Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest

Joey Chestnut made a spectacular return to Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest after missing last year’s event due to a sponsorship issue. It was a comeback that seemed seamless, as he devoured 70.5 hot dogs and buns to clinch his 17th title in the last 18 contests, with his only loss being to Matt Stonie in 2015.

In the first three minutes, Chestnut managed to consume 30 hot dogs, setting a pace that hinted at a potential record-breaking performance of 76. Yet, things began to slow down after that, with only 11 more hot dogs consumed in the subsequent two minutes. To put it in perspective, he had eaten 58 hot dogs in the first 7.5 minutes last year. So, the focus was shifting toward breaking records again.

As he continued, fatigue set in, and he struggled to meet his previous record, falling short five times. Nonetheless, this was his best competition since setting his record in 2021, marking the seventh time he has surpassed the 70 hot dog milestone. Interestingly, this was also his 20th appearance at this iconic event, a remarkable achievement.

Last year’s champion, Patrick Betretti, finished with 46.5 hot dogs and buns, while Chestnut’s absence last year stemmed from a prior agreement with Impossible Foods, a competing brand. Fortunately, Chestnut announced a reconciliation with the event organizers last month regarding sponsorship matters.

Expressing his excitement, Chestnut wrote on X, “I’m thrilled to be back at Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. This event is deeply significant to me as a celebration of cherished traditions and American culture.” He also mentioned his ongoing partnerships with various companies, emphasizing they don’t conflict with his passion for hot dogs.

Despite the competition, Chestnut remains a favorite, having set a world record for eating popcorn only a month prior. His journey in the world of competitive eating continues to capture attention and admiration.
