PETA provides vegan hot dogs at the Nathan's competition

Activism Meets Competition on Coney Island

Joey Chestnut wasn’t the only notable figure at Coney Island during Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. Just before the event kicked off, members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) made their voices heard.

The organization set up shop outside Nathan’s and handed out vegan hot dogs to attendees. Meanwhile, the kitchen was busy preparing hundreds of Nathan’s iconic franks for the contest, which is always quite the spectacle.

PETA spokespersons, when speaking with Fox News Digital, stated, “Tommy Tofu and his PETA friends were there bright and early.” They emphasized their belief in the merits of vegan hot dogs, suggesting they’re a kinder and more humane option. “Those who continue to support slaughterhouses, well, it’s time for a change,” they remarked. PETA encouraged folks to consider a more compassionate lifestyle after the July 4th festivities.

In the contest itself, Joey Chestnut made a triumphant return. After losing the title last year, he seemed as determined as ever, consuming 70.5 hot dogs in just 10 minutes. Remarkably, this marked his 17th victory in the last 18 competitions, although he did suffer a defeat against Matt Stony back in 2015. He even surpassed the 70-hot dog mark for the seventh time.

While the PETA presence this year was notably less confrontational than in 2022, where protests turned physical, they were still active in promoting veganism. Last year, they even brought a truck to encourage attendees to embrace a plant-based diet.

The juxtaposition of Chestnut’s competitive spirit and PETA’s advocacy highlights an ongoing dialogue about food choices and traditions in America.
