The Video Release by President Bukele Casts Doubt on Abrego Garcia’s Claims
Recently, a video shared by El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has raised questions regarding Kilmer Abrego Garcia’s allegations. In the footage posted on X, Abrego Garcia is seen enjoying various activities such as gardening, soccer, and fishing while he is in custody in El Salvador.
This video contrasts sharply with Abrego Garcia’s legal claims, where he described severe mistreatment, including being beaten, sleep-deprived, and psychologically tortured. He also mentioned a weight loss of over 30 pounds.
Bukele remarked:
It seems that the media and the failing Western judicial system readily accept all criminal claims as fact. However, this man was not tortured and did not lose weight. In fact, the images suggest he gained weight while in custody. If he truly experienced torture and sleep deprivation, why does he appear so well in all the photos? Where are the bruises or dark circles under his eyes?
Earlier this year, a federal judge determined that Abrego Garcia was wrongfully deported to El Salvador by the Trump administration. He has since returned to the United States following a court ruling.
Abrego Garcia, who was living illegally in Maryland, was deported in March. Democratic leaders and traditional media depicted him as a “Maryland man,” using his case as a symbol of their opposition to the Trump administration’s deportation efforts.
This situation also included a well-publicized visit to El Salvador by Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen, who met with inmates during his trip.
The Trump administration accused Abrego Garcia of having connections to the MS-13 gang and referred to allegations of domestic violence made by his wife.
Reports indicate that Abrego Garcia was initially held in a “notorious” terrorism prison and later moved to a low-security facility in Santa Ana in mid-April.
Bukele did not specify which prisons were shown in the video.
According to reports, the U.S. Department of Justice welcomed Abrego Garcia’s return with a 10-page indictment, accusing him of being heavily involved in gang-related violence, human trafficking, and abuse towards women he allegedly smuggled.
Last month, Abrego Garcia pleaded not guilty to all charges, and he is currently in federal custody in Nashville, Tennessee.
Interestingly, his lawyer has mentioned that if he is released, he could still face deportation again under Trump’s policies.
