Sometimes, not being the most expensive is actually a good thing.
In an interesting turn of events, a recent study identified the priciest tourist destinations in the U.S., and New York City didn’t even crack the top five.
The report, which looked at 91 popular travel spots across the country, ranked the 55 most costly locations.
The crown goes to Aspen, Colorado, a favored retreat for the likes of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez, as well as Justin and Hailey Bieber. This ski haven is known for its exorbitant prices, especially during winter, but it remains pricey throughout the year, the data suggests.
On average, a three-day trip for two people in Aspen can run about $2,708. Air travel adds a significant chunk to the expenses, averaging over $1,300. Additionally, accommodations for three nights can be around $791, while meals can total approximately $510.
In second place is another celebrity hotspot: Santa Barbara, California. The estimated cost for a similar three-day trip there is about $2,446.
Anchorage, Alaska—often a launching point for adventures into the state’s wilderness—came in third. Fairbanks, another Alaska destination focused on Arctic experiences, landed in the fifth spot.
Interestingly, not all destinations are beyond reach. Clearwater, Florida, known for its beautiful beaches, ranks at the bottom of the list, with a trip for two adults costing under $1,630.
In fact, Kissimmee near Orlando is ranked 54th, while Orlando itself sits at 52nd.
As for New York City, it surprisingly ranks 7th. A three-night stay for two adults in Manhattan now averages about $2,134, broken down as $878 for airfare, $401 for hotels, $788 for food, and $68 for drinks.
