Bill Belichick’s Tough Coaching Style: A Lesson for Stephon Gilmore

Bill Belichick isn’t one to hold back when it comes to critiquing players, and Stephon Gilmore’s experiences are no exception.

Reflecting on his arrival in New England back in 2017, the 34-year-old cornerback recalled an intense moment during a team meeting. “He tore into me one day when I first got there,” Gilmore shared during a recent appearance on the Money Down podcast. “I was pushed into a receiver during a specific route, and I guess I didn’t execute it well. He really laid into me in the next meeting.”

His emotions were still raw from that moment. “I almost cried, honestly. I thought, how did he just do that to me? I had to go to the bathroom to gather myself.” It’s those moments that shape a player’s mentality.

During his four years with the Patriots, Gilmore not only earned a spot on two All-Pro teams but also clinched the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2019. He was part of the Super Bowl-winning team in 2018, a significant achievement in his career.

Despite the tough love from Belichick, Gilmore has always regarded the coach highly. He referred to him as the “greatest coach ever.” This acknowledgment came even after he critiqued how Belichick was portrayed in last year’s “dynasty” documentary on Apple TV+. “I just watched the documentary. Bill’s the best coach I’ve ever worked with, no doubt about it. I remember how we came together as a team throughout the 2018 season, right up to the Super Bowl,” he mentioned.

Recently, after a season with the Vikings, Gilmore has found himself in a position where he’s not currently signed with any team. However, he remains optimistic about returning to the NFL. “I want to play this year. It needs to be the right situation, though,” he expressed on the podcast. “I still love the game and believe I can contribute. It just needs to feel right.”
