Yankees Plan to Promote Cam Schlitler
The Yankees are looking to promote Cam Schlitler to make his major league debut against the Mariners, possibly on Tuesday or Wednesday. This information has come to light, although the team hasn’t made any formal announcements yet.
At 24, Schlittler has shown promise this season, posting a 3.52 ERA across 15 games, including 14 starts in both double-A and triple-A. It seems the Yankees are somewhat in a rotation crisis.
This season, pitchers Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, and Will Warren have already started games, but with Clark Schmidt now needing Tommy John surgery—a point confirmed by Aaron Boone before Saturday’s subway series—there’s uncertainty about the remaining rotation spots.
Meanwhile, Marcus Stroman is back, but it’s worth noting that Gerrit Cole has been out this year following Tommy John surgery earlier in the spring. Also, Alan Winans isn’t likely to start on Tuesday or Wednesday as he needs around 15 days to recover.
The Yankees anticipate that Lewis Gill, who hasn’t pitched yet this year due to injury but is currently in rehabilitation, might return to the rotation around the start of the second half of the season or possibly by the trade deadline on July 31. Ryan Yarbra is another name being considered for a potential comeback in August, but getting a starter before the trade deadline seems increasingly essential.
For now, it seems like Schlitler is set to get a chance to shine.
Drafted 7th overall in 2022, the 6-foot-6 right-handed pitcher impressed the Yankees during spring training. After a solid run in Double-A, he continued to perform in Triple-A until early June. His initial four starts were noteworthy, though he faced challenges in his most recent outing—allowing seven runs in just two and a half innings against a Phillies affiliate.
