NFL: Things like Bad Lip-Reading and 'Tubthumping' that come to mind

When we initially launched Skinny Post on SB Nation, Michael Peterson and RJ Ochoa envisioned it as a unique space to discuss football—because, let’s face it, soccer deserves its own dialogue.

This is particularly true because soccer has a way of stirring up unexpected emotions within us, and that’s basically what this week’s edition is all about.

We’ve compiled four distinct moments that can happen during an NFL game, highlighting the really random aspects that make us reflect on past experiences. The gist? We’re chatting about the most unexpected ways the NFL elicits feelings.

So, let’s dive in.

When time runs out: field goals, etc.

RJ:

Let’s be clear: what I’m describing doesn’t happen all the time—especially when my team, the Dallas Cowboys, isn’t involved. Emotions definitely shift in those cases.

But sometimes, when a game-winning play occurs, it feels perfect. The lighting is just right, and the players move in sync, almost in harmony. It’s as if everything has collided into a beautiful moment.

This really hit home when I saw a highlight, and I thought of Ed Sheeran’s song “Shivers.” You know, the one that’s really upbeat and fits the vibe of a successful juke play? I might not be the only one who thinks that—after all, two years back, when the New York Jets were making plays, I actually used that song as background music.

I can’t watch highlights like that without hearing the song in my head.

Michael:

Speaking of songs, every now and then, when certain defensive plays happen, I can’t help but think of Chumbawamba’s “Tubthumping.” It just pops into my head, especially when I see quarterbacks like Joe Burrow getting pressured.

So, now you might have that song stuck in your head after reading this, and for that, I apologize.

When the head coach tears up during a disagreement

Michael:

Coaches are just like the rest of us—they can genuinely be overcome by emotion during crucial moments. I often recall that “bad lip reading” video where an ex-Cowboys coach, Jason Garrett, is animatedly yelling into his phone about something ridiculous.

That scene just makes me laugh every time. If you haven’t seen those bad lip readings, you really should check them out.

RJ:

Good callback! It’s like when a chef is critiquing a dish on a cooking show. You never really know what to expect, but the energy can be infectious.

Garrett’s outbursts are both amusing and bizarre. NFL coaches certainly have their own unique flair.

When the coach tries to ice the kicker

RJ:

We’ve all witnessed that moment when a head coach tries to ice the kicker just before attempting a crucial field goal. The anticipation is palpable, right?

They stand by the officials, waiting. And waiting. It’s like a game of chicken until that very last moment.

I’m pretty sure Dick Jauron was one of the first to pull off that tactic back when he was coaching the Buffalo Bills. It’s become a staple since then.

Michael:

Every time I see a coach hover near the referee during that critical moment, I can’t help but think of Dr. Evil from Austin Powers, trying to hold back that dramatic laugh. It’s just a weird feeling.

When a player makes a name for himself

Michael:

Key and Peele’s sketches have produced some of the funniest bits about football in recent memory. Their skit about the player introductions is just brilliant.

They hilariously exaggerate the uniqueness of some athlete names, bringing them to a whole new level. Remember “Hingle McRingleberry”? That name is almost iconic now, both in comedy and football circles.

RJ:

Honestly, some things really do get under my skin. I mean, there’s only one school allowed to use “The” before their name: Ohio State University. It’s a rule, no debate.

It just sounds ridiculous when players drop “The” for lesser-known schools, especially if they’re not famous for producing NFL talent.
