Gun violence and shootings surge over the Fourth of July holiday weekend

Chicago’s Violent 4th of July Weekend

During the recent 4th of July weekend, Chicago witnessed a troubling surge in gun violence, with reports indicating over 50 people were shot. The Democratic mayor of Chicago, however, seemed more preoccupied with the safety of LGBTQ pride events and visitors to the city.

Within a span from midnight Thursday to Sunday night, at least eight fatalities were recorded from gunfire. It’s worth noting that the weekends of 2024 were even more tragic, with 105 individuals shot and 22 fatalities reported.

The latest holiday weekend saw instances of violence where gunmen targeted crowds, injuring several individuals. Particularly alarming was a drive-by shooting in the Little Village area early Saturday, resulting in four injuries.

City data suggests that Chicago has recorded 206 murders this year, which, while significant, actually reflects a 31% decrease compared to 2024. The total number of fatal shootings for this year stands at 171.

One particularly shocking incident occurred last Wednesday when a substantial fire erupted near a restaurant, coinciding with gunfire directed at a crowd. Witness accounts indicate that victims were exiting an event held by a local rapper when the shots rang out, leading to a chaotic scene.

In total, 18 individuals were described as shot, with four confirmed dead. Swift action was taken by emergency services, transporting three victims in critical condition to local hospitals.

Authorities stated that the victims included individuals aged between 23 and 27. The police have emphasized the reckless nature of the gunfire, with officials expressing dismay over the shooter’s disregard for life.

As community activists seek to curb the violence, Chicago Police Superintendent has also made comments regarding the nature of the event during which the shootings occurred, emphasizing that it wasn’t on their radar due to its private nature.

Despite the chaos and violence of the weekend, unacknowledged by some in city leadership, Mayor Brandon Johnson took to social media to discuss the importance of prioritizing public safety, particularly regarding LGBTQ tourism. He previously highlighted Chicago as a safe destination for such visitors.

Responses to his statements were mixed, with some calling his focus misplaced given the recent violence. A few commenters even questioned whether the mayor was aware of the ongoing issues.

Interestingly, Johnson’s social media posts around this time did not mention the recent shootings at all, instead focusing on the positive aspects of the LGBTQ pride festival that occurred last Saturday.

This reaction sparked frustration among constituents, leading some to openly criticize the mayor for seemingly ignoring prevalent crime issues while pushing for celebrations.

Mayor Johnson’s office has not yet responded to inquiries about the violence over the weekend. Meanwhile, many residents continue to express their concerns regarding public safety amid rising crime rates.
