Harris English Faces Caddy Issues Ahead of Open Championship

Harris English is preparing for next week’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush, likely without his usual caddy, Eric Larson.

Larson is currently unable to leave the U.S. due to problems obtaining an Electronic Travel Agency (ETA) visa, a requirement for Americans traveling to the UK. This situation has arisen because, well, it’s a bit complicated given current regulations.

Three decades ago, Larson faced legal troubles when he pleaded guilty to sending cocaine to a friend. He wasn’t a significant dealer and didn’t use the substance himself, but he still ended up serving over ten years in prison. He was released from a halfway house in June 2006.

When applying for his ETA, Larson didn’t realize past convictions could affect his approval. Often, applicants who have served prison sentences longer than 12 months can be denied. “I didn’t think the UK would even consider his history,” English mentioned at the Renaissance Club leading up to the tournament. “Seems like it’s still a work in progress.”

Despite Larson’s troubles, English, who’s currently ranked 19th globally and 10th in the U.S. in the Ryder Cup standings, is optimistic. He recalled that after Larson performed well at the Travelers Championship three weeks ago, he hadn’t noticed anything amiss.

In efforts to resolve the situation, English reached out to British ambassador Warren Stevens, alongside his Chief of Staff. “We’ve sent letters,” he explained, adding that the R&A, PGA Tour, and even a charity Larson is associated with have all written in support. “It feels like Eric’s paperwork is just… lost somewhere,” he said, somewhat frustrated.

English has previously represented Team USA successfully, including a notable performance during the 2021 Ryder Cup. He, along with Larson, hopes to maintain their strong partnership, as the stakes rise with the upcoming event at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York.
