Bodycam footage reveals Mary Lou Retton struggling with sobriety tests prior to DUI arrest

Mary Lou Retton Arrested for DUI in West Virginia

Mary Lou Retton, a celebrated Olympic gold medalist, was arrested in West Virginia on May 17 after failing a series of field sobriety tests, according to newly released police body camera footage. This footage, which has come to light, shows Fairmont County police officers administering tests over a span of about seven minutes.

During the incident, Retton was observed removing an oxygen tube from her nose before attempting the tests. Earlier this year, she had been diagnosed with “rare pneumonia,” which may have impacted her condition at the time.

When asked by an officer whether she had a valid driver’s license, Retton replied, “It’s in Texas.” After nearly 10 minutes of testing, one officer remarked that “she failed.” A visibly shocked Retton responded, “What am I?!” To which the officer confirmed, “You’ve failed to complete all the tests, ma’am.”

In a moment of disbelief, she countered, “No, I didn’t!” but the officer insisted otherwise. Eventually, Retton refused to undergo additional testing for alcohol levels when informed of her arrest on DUI charges. As she was being handcuffed, she expressed her frustration to a bystander, exclaiming, “They think I’m drunk!”

Following the incident, footage showed her being escorted to the police station. Once there, she agreed to a blood test to determine her blood alcohol content. Mugshots taken during this time depicted a tearful Retton.

Records from Marion County indicate that she was charged with driving under the influence. She was subsequently released after posting a $1,500 bond. In a statement released by her attorney, Retton took full responsibility for her actions, acknowledging her poor choice to drive while under the influence. She expressed gratitude for the support she has received and mentioned her determination to learn from this experience.

Additionally, she entered a no-contest plea, leading to a standard $100 fine consistent with similar first-time offences. Her attorney emphasized that Retton respects the legal process and views this incident as an opportunity for personal reflection.

Mary Lou Retton gained fame as a prominent figure in gymnastics, famously achieving a perfect 10 at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, where she secured five medals—one gold, two silvers, and two bronzes. After retiring from gymnastics, she became a motivational speaker, advocating for wellness and fitness. She has also served on the Presidential Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

Recently, she has been open about her health struggles, notably when diagnosed with a severe illness in 2023. In a heartfelt interview in 2024, she expressed her appreciation for being alive and the support she received during her recovery.
