UFC legend Randy Couture was airlifted to a burn center after sustaining serious injuries in a race car accident during a practice session at the National Hot Rod Association in Kansas City on Tuesday.
Authorities reported that Couture experienced first and second-degree burns, along with traumatic injuries and smoke inhalation. The specific details surrounding the crash are still unclear, but at 62 years old, he is expected to recover.
Couture had recently transitioned from mixed martial arts to car racing, preparing for his NHRA debut with a ’37 Chevrolet Pro Mod named “Al Capone.”
Originally, the Everett, Washington native was set to compete in the Virginia NHRA Nationals in June but had to withdraw. He mentioned in a social media video at the time that he needed more practice to ensure safety, not just for himself, but also for others on the track.
Just a few weeks after announcing his switch to drag racing in April, the unfortunate accident occurred. He had expressed excitement about bringing his wrestling and martial arts background to the racing scene, though he wasn’t quite sure how it would all unfold.
Throughout his career, Couture has claimed six UFC championships, which include three heavyweight titles and two light heavyweight titles, plus an interim light heavyweight title.
