Trump Administration Shifts Away from DEI and Climate Policies
The Trump administration has decided not to enforce the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) requirements that were part of the previous Biden administration’s initiatives. This announcement was made by Sean Duffy on Wednesday.
According to Duffy, the previous administration left behind a substantial backlog of grant projects tied to these DEI policies. He remarked, “It’s America’s new day, with common sense in the driver’s seat,” indicating a shift in focus for the agency.
“Our roads, railroads, sky, and water will make it safer. The public wants to see their hard-earned dollars directed toward safety and efficiency standards,” he added.
Duffy referenced President Trump’s executive order, urging recipients of Department of Transportation (DOT) funding to “identify and eliminate” any agreements related to climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, and the previous administration’s initiatives focused on diversity and inclusion.
While the DOT had promoted DEI policies until January 20, 2021, Duffy made it clear that his department would not uphold these or any other requirements that do not align with the current administration’s goals.
Duffy noted, amidst criticism about delays from the previous administration, that he inherited around 3,200 grants. Despite this daunting number, he reported that they have already processed 1,065 grants, amounting to approximately $100 billion, since taking office in January.
