NFL Coaches Facing Pressure as Training Camp Approaches

As NFL training camps get ready to kick off, the tension is already building, especially for certain head coaches who may find themselves in jeopardy this season.

Coaches like Brian Daboll of the New York Giants, Shane Steichen of the Indianapolis Colts, and Brian Callahan from the Tennessee Titans seem to have a bit more security, potentially extending their stay past the 2025 season. Yet, others might want to keep a watchful eye on their performance, as it’s common to see six to seven coaching changes each offseason. Heading into this season without a sense of urgency might not be wise.

Coaches on the Hot Seat for 2025

This might not be a headline grabber, but let’s examine the coaches who could be in trouble, listed alphabetically.

Mike McDaniel, Miami Dolphins

It wasn’t too long ago that Mike McDaniel was seen as one of the brightest young offensive minds in football. He’s got a strong offensive background and an engaging personality. However, the Dolphins are dealing with some leadership challenges, and McDaniel’s position may be at risk. With offseason uncertainties and ongoing concerns about Tua Tagovailoa’s health, if the team struggles this season, say finishing 28-23 in the regular season and 0-2 in the postseason, McDaniel could be on shaky ground, though he might still find another chance in the future.

Raheem Morris, Atlanta Falcons

This is merely Morris’ second year at the helm for the Falcons, and while he has the support of team owner Arthur Blank, there’s a lot at stake. The roster has been well-invested in, with many talented young players, and pressure is on to achieve results in a competitive division. If the Falcons, who ended last season with an 8-9 record, regress to a 5-12 or 6-11 finish, the heat will certainly be on Morris. With only one winning season over four years, doubts about his capabilities could surface if he fails to make progress in 2025.

Zach Taylor, Cincinnati Bengals

After the 2022 season, Taylor appeared to have job security in Cincinnati, considering the turnaround he orchestrated after taking on a dire situation. However, despite a successful run that saw them win five playoff games in the 2021-22 season, the Bengals have struggled lately, going 9-8 in the past two seasons without reaching the playoffs. If Taylor can’t secure a postseason spot in 2025, the stakes will rise significantly, especially given the star talent on the roster like Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins. A missed opportunity could make him a target for teams seeking a new head coach in 2026.

Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers

Including Mike Tomlin’s name on this list might seem a bit harsh, but it’s a reality that this could be his last season as the head coach. Since 2007, Tomlin has consistently been among the NFL’s leaders, never experiencing a losing season. However, the Steelers haven’t won a playoff game since 2016, and with mounting pressure to succeed, this season feels different. If playoff contention eludes them yet again, it could lead to a much-needed reset for the franchise.
