Former NFL player RG3 intensifies the Angel Reese-Caitlin Clark controversy

Robert Griffin III Defends Angel Reese Amid Controversy

Former NFL player Robert Griffin III spoke out on Thursday regarding Angel Reese, a player for the Chicago Skystar, after a controversy emerged involving WNBA forward Caitlyn Clark. Griffin noted that someone within Reese’s close circle appeared to have negative feelings towards Clark.

On social media, Griffin expressed his support for Reese following the backlash surrounding a racist image of her in NBA 2K26. He stated that “there is no place for racism,” asserting that Reese should never be compared to a monkey. Griffin, who had been relatively quiet on the matter due to the vitriol directed at him and his family, felt it was time to speak up.

He reflected on the rivalry between the two basketball stars, saying, “It’s a sport. No one has to like each other.” He added that media comparisons between the two players had fueled tension, with some individuals labeling it a racial issue, though he did not personally see it that way. Griffin emphasized his intent to remain impartial and not play the role of a villain in this unfolding narrative.

Reese seemingly responded to Griffin’s social media comments in a later post, suggesting that he was misled. She remarked on the falsehoods circulating regarding her inner circle and the ongoing media speculation about their feelings towards Clark. Reese’s mother echoed this sentiment, accusing Griffin of fabricating claims about insider conversations.

Griffin stood firm in his position. He claimed his intention was to provide Reese with support against racism, rather than to stir up drama. He reiterated that he had not expressed hatred towards Clark, and noted the complexity of the situation, wanting to celebrate the sport rather than perpetuate conflict.

In May, Griffin made headlines when he first alleged that Reese harbored animosity towards Clark, igniting a fiery debate among fans and commentators. Both athletes have since been selected for the All-Star Game, demonstrating their prominence in the sport.
