Newsom Encourages Activism at Tennessee Event

California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, urged activists to take inspiration from historical figures like civil rights leader Cesar Chavez during an event on Wednesday.

Speaking at an event organized by Eastern Nashtivists in Tennessee, Newsom highlighted the significance of activism. His address followed a visit to South Carolina, a crucial state for the Democratic primary in 2028.

“When you reflect on transformative leaders, you think of iconic figures like Dr. King, Mandela, and Chavez. They all faced similar challenges, including imprisonment,” Newsom noted. He emphasized the common thread of resilience among these leaders.

Eastern Nashtivists is described as a “progressive grassroots organization,” aligning with various causes, including parent-child relationships and voter registration. During his speech, Newsom celebrated Chavez’s legacy, suggesting that sometimes breaking the law might be necessary to achieve significant goals.

“I don’t think Gandhi ever spent a day in formal authority, but he possessed something much more powerful—moral authority,” Newsom mentioned, reinforcing the importance of that type of influence in activism today.

Chavez himself was imprisoned for 21 days in 1970 after he defied a court order related to a boycott. His leadership during the long-standing United Farm Workers strike exemplifies the struggles faced by those advocating for change.

In other remarks, Newsom commented on the recent nationwide raids conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), particularly in Los Angeles, where recent protests resulted in significant damage, estimated at $20 million. In response, Senator Alex Padilla, also a Democrat from California, introduced a bill in Congress earlier this week.
