Senator Ron Johnson Engages with FBI and DOJ Over Trump Assassination Attempt

Senator Ron Johnson, a Republican from Wisconsin, is bracing for a subpoena from both the FBI and the Department of Justice. This comes as he seeks details regarding last year’s assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Johnson, who leads the Standing Subcommittee on Investigation, previously co-authored a bipartisan report by the Senate Homeland Security Committee that examined the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. He took the time to speak with the widow of a firefighter who tragically lost his life during the event, highlighting the human cost of what happened.

Despite his efforts, Johnson has expressed frustrations regarding the investigation’s pace, describing it as “mad” due to various hindrances. Recently, he authorized a subpoena to pursue further information from the FBI and DOJ. “I want our report to be bipartisan, but others aren’t showing much interest in this inquiry,” he explained, underscoring his determination to move forward, regardless of others’ involvement.

This comes a year after the assassination attempt, as the widow of the firefighter is now calling for accountability from the Secret Service. Johnson has criticized the FBI and DOJ for not sharing crucial documents needed for the investigation, stating, “We’re not getting the information we require to proceed.” His disappointment was evident: “I’m really not happy about it.”

Almost exactly one year ago, gunman Thomas Crooks unleashed a hail of bullets from a rooftop near the Trump rally, injuring the then-presidential candidate and claiming the life of Corey Comperatore, a firefighter who was among the attendees.

Johnson also mentioned the ongoing collaboration with FBI officials and various parties involved in the investigation to ensure that the truth comes to light. He has reiterated the importance of a bipartisan approach, showing his hope that other members will cooperate: “While I have the authority to issue a unilateral subpoena if needed, it’s always better when everyone is on board.”
