Yankees Designate DJ Lemahieu
It was a move many expected, but that doesn’t diminish its impact: the Yankees decided to designate DJ Lemahieu for assignment on Wednesday. This decision was certainly about performance, but for those who know him well, particularly the captain of the team, it meant much more than the $22 million the organization is effectively writing off.
“This isn’t easy, especially considering what DJ has meant to this team and to us as players,” the captain remarked at Yankee Stadium on Thursday. “I’ve played alongside him for years, and many of our playoff runs wouldn’t have happened without DJ’s contributions.”
Lemahieu’s recent years have been marred by injuries that affected his ability to perform at his usual level. It’s a big change for someone who was once a two-time batting champion, and now he finds himself struggling to get on the field regularly, a situation he never imagined would unfold.
At 37, it’s clear he’s feeling it—but Danny conveyed that this spring, it was particularly tough for him not being there with his teammates. You could sense that frustration in his words.
“Baseball is DJ’s life,” the captain continued. “It’s really all he ever wanted to focus on. He loves the game and has always played with passion. It’s just a part of who he is.”
There’s no doubt that the injuries had a significant effect. He wanted nothing more than to be there, contributing and supporting the team. When he couldn’t perform, it was evident how much that weighed on him.
“It’s a tough situation to see it end like this, but he will definitely be missed here,” the captain said, perhaps reflecting a common sentiment among the team.
