RCMP Warns of Radicalization Risks Linked to Traditional Values
A representative from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) cautioned on Tuesday that someone who starts embracing what are termed “traditional values” might be on the path to extremism.
As reported, the Canadian Federal Police arrested four individuals in Quebec believed to be involved in “ideologically motivated violent extremism.” Among them, three have been charged with actions aimed at promoting terrorist activities, while two others face charges related to weapon possession.
Staff Sergeant Camille Habel of the RCMP discussed militia-related allegations regarding land seizures in Quebec in an interview. During the conversation, the CBC host asked about what the public could do to enhance safety and security in response to these risks.
“Radicalization often manifests when individuals begin isolating themselves or altering their behavior,” Habel explained. “So, if someone who once supported gender equality suddenly shifts towards traditional values, that might indicate a move towards radical beliefs.” However, she added a cautionary note, stating that many extreme views are not illegal until they lead to violent actions.
Habel’s remarks drew significant backlash on social media, prompting another spokesperson for the RCMP to clarify her statements.
On Wednesday, the RCMP issued a statement emphasizing that not everyone embracing traditional values is radical or extreme. “It’s actually a notable change in thoughts, behaviors, or aspirations that might lead to violence that indicates a person might become radicalized,” Habel explained further. “Each scenario needs to be evaluated on its own, considering all aspects.”
