Teachers Union’s Misstep on Fascism in Resolution

The largest teachers union in the U.S. is in hot water this week for a blunder regarding the term “fascism” in a resolution criticizing President Trump.

The National Education Association (NEA), which represents over 3 million educators across the country, passed a poorly worded proposal during its annual conference on Sunday, aimed at safeguarding what it calls “the survival of civilization itself.”

In the proposal, the NEA commits to “defend democracy against Trump’s embrace of fascism” by using the term “fascism” correctly, although it was noted that the wording was off. Someone on social media highlighted the mistake.

The resolution specified that “NEA members and material resources must, by stating the truth, be committed to defending the democratic and educational conditions necessary for the survival of a just society.” However, it made an error in calling out Trump’s “fascism,” prompting comments on the inadequacies of current staff and resources to support this stance.

Critics, including Deangelis on social media, took playful jabs at the NEA for their spelling error. One individual remarked, “Yes, unions claiming to represent educators couldn’t even spell ‘fascism’ correctly in their official resolutions.” It seemed almost too ironic to be real.

Tina Descovich, the CEO and co-founder of Moms for Liberty, expressed concern, arguing that if such prominent teacher unions can’t accurately define “fascism,” it reflects poorly on the educational system as a whole. She claimed the focus seems less on teaching essential skills like reading and math, and more on political issues, which she finds frustrating.

Washington State Republican Senator Jim Walsh characterized the resolution as “hysterical slander” against Trump and suggested that this kind of rhetoric explains why families choose to withdraw children from public schooling.

“Political lobbying organizations are mislabeling the president’s actions while messing up the term,” Walsh noted, commenting on the tendency for families to turn to homeschooling in response to such issues.

On social media, individuals pointed out the significance of spelling “fascism” accurately and how this might reflect on the NEA’s credibility. One user even shared an amusing anecdote from their history class that highlighted the folly of the situation.

The NEA has yet to respond to requests for comment on the matter.
