Baltimore – Jesse Winker Faces Injury Concerns Again
Jesse Winker’s comeback with the Mets took another turn as he faced injury worries after just three plate appearances. The veteran designated hitter was slated to head back to New York for an MRI following his early exit from the Mets’ 3-1 loss to the Orioles during the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday.
Winker, who had just returned from a two-month stint on the injured list due to strained muscles, was replaced in the lineup by Mark Vientos after feeling discomfort in the first inning. Meanwhile, another key DH, Starling Marte, was recently placed on the injured list with bone bruises in his right knee, which adds to the team’s current challenges.
In the short term, Vientos is expected to be a primary DH option. He has been somewhat limited, mainly getting chances against left-handed pitchers. Interestingly, he had a decent outing in the first game of the day with a 2-for-3 performance, improving from his previous struggles where he recorded a mere .074 batting average.
Manager Carlos Mendoza noted, “He hit the ball hard. He’s certainly capable. Hopefully, this game lifts his spirits.” It’s clear the team is leaning on Vientos as they navigate through these injury hurdles.
Before Game 1, the Mets called up Luisangel Acuña from Triple-A Syracuse after designating Travis Jankowski for assignment. According to Mendoza, Acuña will provide additional options at two bases and also take on duties in center field.
Acuña’s journey back to the majors was planned after his stint with Syracuse, where he was expected to get around 40-50 plate appearances. He ended up with 53, which is kind of a nice little bonus, I think. Mendoza emphasized Acuña’s value to the team, stating, “His speed and versatility offer numerous advantages. He was instrumental early on, and now he’s back to help us win.”
Additionally, Paul Blackburn was set to throw a bullpen session as he makes his way back from a right shoulder injury that’s kept him sidelined since June 30.
