In a Vanity Fair YouTube interview titled “Lady Gaga is Lie Detector Test,” she mentioned her unique way of ordering red wine. When asked how she places her order, she replied, “With Maraschino cherry and diet cola.” This revelation passed the lie detector test, and although the interview aired in February, it recently gained traction on TikTok, where various content creators have tested the drink as part of their summer reviews.

The drink, known as Kalimotxo—or Karimocho—originates from the Basque region of Spain. Typically, it mixes red wine with cola, though some variations include lemon-lime soda or orange soda.

One TikTok reviewer commented that the combined flavors of the cola and red wine made it hard to distinguish between the two. “I don’t know if I’ll order it again, but I’ll probably finish this glass,” she added. It seems to blend so subtly that both flavors kind of, well, balance each other out.

Another creator likened the drink to “boozy cherry cola,” but noted the deep tannins from the red wine. However, opinions on the drink have been mixed. Some viewers found it intriguing while others were skeptical. “Gaga definitely swiped that idea from me when I was 16, trying to trick my dad into thinking I wasn’t drinking,” joked one commenter. Others found it pleasant, likening it to sangria, while a third user expressed, “I’m not a fan of red wine, so it’s a no for me.”

Despite the mixed reviews, many European fans were quick to point out that this drink has been a staple in bars across their continent since the late 2000s. One fan recalled meeting Gaga backstage at the Art Rave in London, where she mentioned it was her favorite drink at the time.

According to celebrity brand strategist Laura Burkemper, Gaga’s choice represents a “bold brand expression,” and she describes it as a blend that pushes boundaries in unexpected ways. Burkemper believes this nostalgia-driven drink aligns with a current trend toward globally-inspired, low-effervescence beverages.

Experts note that drinks like Kalimotxo are redefining what luxury means, showcasing unique tastes that Lady Gaga has always embraced. It’s a reflection of a cultural shift towards enjoying casual favorites that resonate across different backgrounds.
