New Goat Eating Contest Coming to Riverside Park
Move over, Joey Chestnut; there’s a new contender in the food competition scene.
This Saturday, five determined goats will participate in their inaugural eating contest, looking to indulge on invasive plants in Riverside Park.
Titled “The Great Goat Glaze Off,” this unique event showcases these furry foragers as they help clear out pesky species like poison ivy and mugwort.
“The girls are definitely excited and preparing for the big day,” said one organizer. “This is a treat before a summer spent here in the park.”
The contest, which marks the start of the grazing season, unexpectedly emerged after last year’s event where goats just ran around, which they apparently didn’t enjoy too much.
“We figured hosting a food contest was a better way to welcome them. It seemed fitting,” explained the event coordinator.
This contest is set to rival Nathan’s iconic Hot Dog Eating Contest, with each goat paired with a coach and a designated counter, similar to how competitive eaters operate.
The five participants—Romeo, Malomar, Butterball, Kash, and Rufus—have just five minutes to devour pre-prepared servings of mugwort as they vie for the top spot.
George Shear, known for hosting Nathan’s contest, will oversee this goat showdown. While it’s uncertain who will come out on top, organizers are keeping an eye on rookie Kash, who Billumbaum suggests might have a bit of an edge.
“Of course, that’s just a guess. Goats aren’t exactly known for following orders, so it’s anyone’s game,” she added, acknowledging the unpredictability of their behavior.
“I think we’re in for a groundbreaking weed-eating event, but what that record will be remains unclear,” she mused.
The five goats will be at Riverside Park all summer, working their way through areas overrun by invasive plants. In fact, they’ve been so effective in the past that they’ve been sent home early to rest.
