Even Superman couldn’t escape this spoiler.
Will Reeve, the son of the late actor Christopher Reeve, shared insights about filming his cameo in the new “Superman” movie and how he found out a snippet of it was leaked online.
“I filmed a cameo in July 2024. My girlfriend at the time—now fiancée, Amanda Dubin—and I planned to have a nice evening out and take some photos the next day before heading back home,” Will, 33, explained. “But then it rained.”
“We were at Newark airport heading to Cleveland, where much of the exterior was filmed for ‘Superman’,” he said, noting the weather conditions. “I’m just watching my map app, checking how long it would take to drive.”
“When you have a task to complete—like being somewhere on time for a live broadcast—I’m so accustomed to making that happen,” he continued.
Will, who has been a correspondent for ABC News since 2018, often appears on programs like “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight.” As he was on his way to the car rental, he made calls to the “Superman” team, assuring them he would be there soon. “They finally told me, ‘You can show up whenever you want. It just takes 20 minutes.'”
When he arrived on set, he met director James Gunn, who offered a tour of the new “Superman” vision. Will then experienced a different pace from his usual news reporting. “I got the shot, but it was a shift from live TV where everything is done in one go.”
“During my cameo, I found myself the only actor present. I mean, I’m not exactly an actor,” he noted, laughing. “There were no other performances happening that day.”
After filming, it seemed like luck was not on his side. Before he could even leave Cleveland for New York, the news of his cameo had already surfaced online. “I went to set, did my bit, and by the time I was at the airport, the news was already out,” he chuckled.
While Will kept details about his cameo close to his chest, he did mention it closely reflected his career as a news correspondent. “I won’t disclose my lines, but let’s just say I wasn’t far off from being myself.”
For Will, being part of the new “Superman” film was particularly special—not just for him, but for honoring his father’s legacy. “I felt honored to receive a call from a filmmaker like that, and I jumped at the chance.” He found it significant that millions have connected with Superman over generations, making it a fitting homage to the legacy of his late father.
Christopher Reeve famously portrayed Superman in the 1978 film and its three sequels. Will only 12 when his father passed away in 2004 due to heart failure, he noted that there had been a tribute on set to his father’s memory. The cast and crew watched documentaries about Christopher’s life prior to starting their own journey.
“Some of the actors mentioned it helped them grasp the importance of getting the film just right,” he explained. Will and his siblings appreciated this gesture and felt moved by it.
On the new film, Will said, “It’s got to deliver a great superhero blockbuster experience.” He added, “Superman is somewhat quirky yet serious—it’s a refreshing take.” He believes this aspect resonates with what his father portrayed.
The latest “Superman” film features David Corenswett in the leading role, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Holt as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen.
“I can’t say what it feels like to play Superman, but I admire David for taking on that mantle,” Will reflected. The film is currently in theaters.
