David Gergen, Renowned Political Figure, Dies at 83

David Gergen, a political advisor who served four U.S. presidents—Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton—has passed away at the age of 83. He died on July 10th in a Massachusetts nursing home.

His son revealed that Gergen had been suffering from dementia. The news of his passing prompted many to share their condolences and memories of the man on social media.

Former California First Lady Maria Shriver expressed her thoughts, stating that “David Gergen was a true expert and a remarkably kind person. My heart goes out to his family. He had a deep love for politics and dedicated his life to serving this country.”

In a tribute, CBS reporter Robert Costa simply remarked, “RIP, Mr. Gergen.”

Former Democratic representative Harold Ford Jr. also shared his reflections on Gergen’s impact. Gergen is credited with the memorable line from Reagan’s 1980 campaign: “Are you better off than you were four years ago?” as noted by the New York Times.

He mentioned in a 1981 interview with the Washington Post that rhetorical questions can wield considerable influence. Reflecting on his experience during the Nixon administration, Gergen admitted that he was young and naive, describing it as a challenging emotional burden.

After his time in public service, Gergen ventured into journalism, holding positions as an editor and columnist, and working with both the conservative American Enterprise Institute and the liberal Kennedy School at Harvard University.

Additionally, he contributed as a commentator for PBS, CNN, and NPR. James A. Baker III, who served as White House Chief of Staff under Reagan, once stated, “To say I rely on him is an understatement. He is our best strategist in terms of communication.”
