How Desi Arnaz fought against alcoholism during his later years after his success on 'I Love Lucy'

Desi Arnaz’s Struggles with Alcoholism and Family Support

Desi Arnaz faced severe challenges due to alcoholism, and during his struggle, he turned to his son for support. Author Todd S. Purdum relayed that after losing his second wife, Arnaz felt isolated and recognized the gravity of his drinking problem. He was aware that continued drinking could lead to dire consequences, presumably death, and thus sought help from his son, Desi Arnaz Jr.

According to Purdum, Desi Jr. responded by saying, “I can’t help you, but I know where to find assistance.” This awareness marked a turning point for Arnaz, who was heaving under immense sadness and mourning. He withdrew from social life, realizing the need for change to survive.

Known for his role as Ricky Ricardo in “I Love Lucy” alongside Lucille Ball, Arnaz passed away from lung cancer in 1986. His life and career are chronicled in Purdum’s new biography titled “Desi Arnaz: The Man Who Invented Television,” which explores his ascent to fame, contributions to television production, and his later years. Desi Jr. participated in this project, offering insight into his father’s life.

Purdum shared that Desi Jr. collaborated closely with his sister Lucy Arnaz, who provided access to family letters and documents. Their joint efforts aimed to bring a deeper understanding of their father’s complex legacy.

Purdum noted that Desi Jr. seemed to grasp the intricacies of his father’s persona—how his early talent and charisma eventually became overshadowed by battles with alcoholism and depression.

Desi Jr. sought treatment for his own issues in 1981. Meanwhile, Arnaz entered a rehab program in 1985 under a pseudonym to maintain his privacy. Although initially resistant, he later returned to treatment after a heartfelt plea, where he confessed, “I need help, I don’t want to die.”

Reflecting on his father’s journey, Desi Jr. expressed pride when Arnaz publicly acknowledged his struggles with alcohol, stating, “My name is Desi and I’m an alcoholic.” It was a moment of vulnerability that moved many, including Lucy, who felt overwhelming pride for her father.

Overall, Purdum emphasized that Arnaz’s issues began long before his Hollywood fame. He suggested that Desi suffered from what could now be recognized as PTSD, stemming from his traumatic experiences as a teenager fleeing Cuba with his family after the revolution.

This tumultuous past, combined with the pressures of a skyrocketing career, led Arnaz to drink as a coping mechanism. Purdum highlighted that while Arnaz found joy in various pleasures, including food, drinks, and music, his marriage was deeply affected by his behaviors. Ironically, “I Love Lucy,” created as an attempt to salvage their marriage, ultimately could not hold it together.

As their relationship deteriorated, issues of fidelity surfaced, notably when Arnaz’s infidelities became public. Lucy’s realization of his dishonesty, especially after an arrest related to alcohol, was devastating for her.

Despite their struggles, Purdum noted that both parents shared a deep affection for their children, aiming throughout to provide a loving environment despite the evident tensions in their relationship. Arnaz and Ball divorced in 1960, but both later remarried.

Arnaz’s second marriage, while happier on the surface, did not seem to break the cycle of infidelity. Yet, Purdum pointed out that Arnaz’s love for Ball remained significant throughout his life.

Sadly, after facing his demons later in life, Arnaz was diagnosed with lung cancer, effectively ending his final battles. He and Ball exchanged heartfelt sentiments in their last moments, a poignant reminder of their storied relationship. Arnaz passed away shortly afterward, leaving behind a complicated yet affectionate legacy.

Purdum encapsulated the essence of Arnaz, who was multifaceted—both a beloved performer and a deeply flawed individual. He urged that while Arnaz portrayed a comedic character, he was much more than just a performer; his life was indeed worth understanding.
