College basketball player Tahaad Pettiford found himself in jail in Alabama early Saturday morning, as reported by prison records. ESPN later noted that the Auburn guard was released, and by the afternoon, his name was no longer listed in the prison logs.
Auburn’s head coach Bruce Pearl, recognizing the gravity of the situation, made a statement about dealing with the matter internally alongside Pettiford and his family. “We take these issues seriously and then learn and grow from moving forward,” Pearl expressed.
This legal incident occurred shortly after Pettiford chose to withdraw from the NBA Draft, a decision he made after a solid freshman season where he averaged 11.6 points per game. He indicated that returning to Auburn was a more suitable choice for him and expressed hopes for a better position next year, hinting that he wasn’t fully prepared this past season.
Pettiford had been an essential contributor to the Auburn Tigers, the team that secured the top seed in this year’s NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Their journey came to an end after a close 79-73 loss against Florida in the Final Four. Notably, he averaged 15.2 points per game during the tournament, highlighting his significant role.
He’s regarded as a promising talent for Auburn’s future, especially since Johnny Bloom, a standout player from the previous season, has moved on to the NBA. Bloom was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round of the most recent draft.
