A year later: Trump talks about surviving an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania

Sunday, July 13th, marks a year since Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, opened fire at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, nearly hitting former President Donald Trump. On this notable anniversary, Trump reflected on what could have happened, acknowledging it as a turning point.

“It was unforgettable,” Trump shared during an interview on a show hosted by Lala Trump. “I didn’t know exactly what was happening at first. I felt a bang, and there was no doubt. Luckily, I managed to get out of there quickly… I think they shot eight bullets. Crooks took the first shot from quite a distance. His name is David, and he did an incredible job.”

According to a recent report, the Secret Service’s crucial security measures fell short during that incident.

From a nearby rooftop, Crooks targeted the rally and, tragically, shot and killed 50-year-old volunteer firefighter Corey Comperatore. He also seriously injured rally attendees David Dutch and James Copenhaver.

Trump remarked on a chart showing the surge of illegal immigration under the Biden administration, somehow feeling it was a stark reminder of how close he came to danger. Experts noted that without immediate action, the situation could have been devastating for the President.

The events of July 13 prompted bipartisan calls for the resignation of then-USSS director Kimberly Cittle. After her departure, Ronald Lowe Jr., previously the deputy director, stepped in as acting director.

A year after the shooting, witnesses express that the ongoing investigation raises more questions than it answers. There’s still uncertainty about the reasons behind Crooks’s attack and how he managed to execute it.

The FBI has yet to uncover any specific ideological or political motivations, suggesting instead a mix of personal issues, mental health struggles, and a craving for notoriety as potential factors behind the aggression.

Trump expressed that he was somewhat “satisfied” with the information provided to him post-event, feeling that certain precautions should have been in place during his appearance: “They should have had someone in the building. That was a mistake. Communication with local police was essential, but they were not in sync that day. They made errors, and I think they recognize that.”
