New Insights on Male Sexual Health
It’s more than just an emotional impact. Low testosterone has often been cited as the main reason for declining erections with age. But, recent studies are suggesting that the real issue might be something different.
Researchers argue that slight increases in blood sugar levels and other metabolic changes could be key factors affecting male sexual health. “While age and testosterone levels were thought to be the primary drivers of these health issues, our findings indicate a closer connection with these metabolic fluctuations,” a researcher mentioned in a press release.
This suggests men might actually have control over their reproductive health through lifestyle and medical choices.
The longitudinal study, starting in 2014 and wrapping up in 2020, was conducted with 200 healthy men aged 18 to 85. In the end, 117 participants remained healthy, free from diabetes, heart conditions, or cancer, which enabled the researchers to focus on the subtle metabolic influences on reproductive health.
Surprisingly, despite aging, men’s hormonal levels and semen quality generally stayed within normal ranges. However, there was a significant decline in erectile function among those with even slight blood sugar elevations, yet still below diabetes levels.
Interestingly, testosterone levels showed no connection to erectile function, but they did correlate with the participants’ sexual desires. The research was presented at Endo 2025, the annual meeting of the Endocrinology Society in San Francisco. Dr. Michael Zitzmann expressed hope that findings from this study would assist doctors and their patients in creating effective plans for maintaining male sexual health.
“We’ve learned that even older men have the ability to sustain their sexual and reproductive well-being,” he stated.
This discussion is particularly timely as there’s an ongoing public debate about testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), which has gained traction despite potential risks. Additionally, some recent studies suggest that grape juice can significantly enhance men’s sexual desires.
Experts continue to assert that while sexual functioning generally declines with age, lifestyle choices such as avoiding smoking, reducing alcohol intake, and managing weight can play a significant role in preserving reproductive health.
