McIlroy Expresses Frustration Over Scotland’s Greens

Rory McIlroy didn’t hold back his displeasure regarding the conditions at Scotland’s opening event. He was caught on a hot mic expressing that “the green is very s-t” after missing a crucial putt during the final round at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick.

Despite his frustration, McIlroy was pleased overall with his performance. American Chris Gotterup ultimately took first place at 15 under overall, finishing the final round at 2-under 68.

“I’m really happy with how my game is progressing, especially after the weekend,” McIlroy commented. “I hit some good shots and managed to control the ball’s flight well. It was a great week, but yes, I am missing that trophy.”

McIlroy, who had previously won this event two years ago, struggled after hole 8, missing opportunities for birdies, which allowed Gotterup to secure a two-stroke victory.

He wasn’t alone in his complaints about the greens; world number one Scottie Scheffler also expressed frustration when he missed a putt at hole 13, demonstrating his annoyance by raising his arms and yelling.

On the other hand, Gotterup played fearlessly, wrapping up his round with a solid 4-under 66. McIlroy acknowledged his strong performance: “Chris had a great round, and he was really solid. I made a bogey at 15, but I bounced back nicely with a birdie at 16.”

Gotterup, originally from Easton, Maryland, who played college golf at Rutgers and Oklahoma, made waves by breaking into the top 50 in the world with this win. “I definitely felt like the villain today,” he reflected. “But I felt mentally prepared, which is something I’ve been focusing on over the past few weeks.”

Looking ahead, the golf world is now turning its focus to Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland, where the Open Championship will take place this week, running from Thursday through Sunday.
