Fall River, Massachusetts – A tragic fire at a living facility in Massachusetts has claimed the lives of nine people and left at least 30 injured.
The incident took place at the Gabriel House Assisted Living facility around 9:50 PM on Sunday, as reported by the Massachusetts Fire Department. When firefighters arrived, thick smoke was pouring out from the front of the building, trapping many residents inside.
By Monday morning, firefighters had managed to rescue numerous residents from the blaze. The facility houses about 70 people.
A total of around 50 firefighters responded to the emergency, with some being turned back due to the situation’s severity.
“This is an immeasurable tragedy for the families involved and the Fall River community,” stated Prime Minister Jeffrey Bacon. “On behalf of the Fall River Fire Station, I express my deepest condolences to those affected.”
He shared an emotional moment, indicating that he saw rescuers breaking a window for escape. Family members had arrived on the scene and witnessed the chaotic attempts to ensure everyone’s safety.
“Officers bravely entered the smoke-filled building, forced open doors, and guided residents to safety,” said the Fall River Police Department in a statement.
Around 12 residents were physically carried out by police, with their swift actions undoubtedly saving many lives.
Some residents were taken to local hospitals for treatment, and five firefighters sustained minor injuries in the course of their efforts.
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healy expressed her sorrow over the event and offered support for those affected. “The fire at Gabriel House in Fall River is devastating. My thoughts are with those waking up to the unimaginable news of their loved ones this morning,” Healy remarked. “I am thankful for the firefighters and first responders, whose heroic actions saved lives. We all pray for the recovery of those injured and for the families mourning their losses.”
Healy also spoke with Mayor Coogan, expressing her full support for the community and noting that a thorough investigation is already underway. “The people of Fall River have shown resilience, and now it’s essential for us to come together during this extremely difficult time,” she added.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by local firefighters, police, State Police, and the Bristol DA’s office.

Located about 20 miles southeast of Providence, Rhode Island, Fall River has a population of roughly 94,000.
