Chip and Joanna Gaines Spark Backlash for Featuring Same-Sex Couple

Television personalities Chip and Joanna Gaines have faced significant criticism from some Christian communities after their new reality series introduced two sons alongside same-sex couples. The couple Jason and Joe Hannah Riggs featured in the Gaines’ show titled “Return to the Frontier,” which premiered on July 10th as part of the Magnolia Network series.

The show has stirred concerns among Christians on social media. As reported, many expressed their discontent with the direction of the program.

“It’s very sad. While we love people, we should love them enough to tell them the truth of God’s Word. His words are absolute truth. God loves us, and his design for marriage is between one man and one woman. Sin is defined as sin in itself,” stated Franklin Graham, son of the late evangelist Billy Graham.

“I hope this isn’t true, but I read today that Chip and Joanna Gaines are featuring a gay couple in a new series. If that’s true, it’s very disappointing. We love people, but we must love them enough to tell them the truth of God’s Word.” – Franklin Graham

Ed Vitaliano, Vice President of the American Family Association, also shared his sorrow over the announcement, calling it “sad,” particularly because Gaines holds considerable influence in the evangelical community. He questioned why the Gaines had stepped away from their previous stance on marriage.

“Furthermore, in the past, they’ve upheld the dignity of marriage, regardless of personal costs. I’m not sure why Gaines has changed this, but going back to the frontier promotes a non-biblical view of human sexuality, marriage, and family.”

The new show has brought attention to same-sex couples, raising concerns among those who hoped Magnolia Network would uphold biblical values.

In response, Gaines condemned the hatred directed at Christians, particularly those within modern American culture.

“Talking, asking questions, and listening might be too much to ask from modern American Christians. It’s a sad Sunday when ‘non-believers’ face hatred or vitriol for the first time,” Gaines remarked on social media.

Chip and Joanna Gaines, best known for their popular reality show “Fixer Upper,” which aired from 2013 to 2018, launched the Magnolia Network in 2021. They have been married since 2003 and share five children.

Beyond the controversy regarding the same-sex couple, Joanna Gaines has also expressed support for a gay creative director, Billy Jack Brawner, who came out in 2021 while still married with children.

“I’m in love with a very good person. My life is so good, and I’m very grateful,” he stated on Instagram.

Joanna’s posts indicate her support, as she commented positively about Brawner. He has contributed to Magnolia Journal, promoting various projects since becoming a freelance writer.
