The attention-grabbing presidency: How Trump leads through diversion

Trump’s “Two Weeks” Strategy: A Pattern of Delay and Distraction

President Donald Trump has suggested that a buyer for TikTok will be disclosed in “about two weeks.” This phrase has become a familiar part of his communication style—an ever-changing timeline that keeps hinting action is around the corner but, oddly, never quite arrives.

Just weeks prior, Trump had reiterated a similar timeframe, stating it would take “approximately two weeks” to decide how to approach Iran. Yet, he acted within three days. It’s a pattern we’ve seen before; when discussing Russia’s President Vladimir Putin about two months back, Trump also responded, “We’ll let you know in about two weeks.”

As pointed out by Sean McCleesh from the New York Times, Trump’s “two weeks” mantra isn’t limited to any single topic. It spans issues like tax plans, healthcare, and even infrastructure. It seems to be a strategy Trump has utilized throughout his presidency, often leveraging this two-week promise to navigate political scrutiny.

This “two weeks” tactic appears calculated; it creates an illusion of immediacy while also providing him with a buffer to avoid deeper investigation. It generates public hope, fuels speculation among the media, and, ultimately, it seems to distract from more pressing issues. In a way, it cloaks true transparency.

During Trump’s second term, this kind of distraction has proven strikingly effective. Despite growing concerns over policy failures and allegations of corruption, he’s managed to stay in the limelight and shape narratives faster than the facts can catch up. Scholar Tim Wu discussed how our society’s attention economy—rich in advertising and misinformation—has allowed Trump to thrive amidst chaos.

Mickey Huff, along with others, stated that Trump’s rise is rooted in a media landscape where spectacle trumps truth, and this constant engagement helps drive viewership and revenue. This cycle benefits Trump and the media alike while pressing matters often receive scant attention.

Trump seems to prioritize drama and visuals over substance, seeing governance through a television lens. During an exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, he even noted how the media presence made for “great television.” His strategy often involves misdirection, using delays to fend off scrutiny before shifting focus to a fresh issue.

Take, for instance, an announcement made earlier this year regarding tariffs. Trump’s team generated confusion which led to a market downturn, and his popularity took a hit. In response, rather than addressing the economic fallout directly, he redirected attention to immigration and protests—issues that he has sensationalized in the past.

When protests erupted, Trump made claims regarding paid demonstrators opposing U.S. deportation policies, even as local leaders stated that intervention was unnecessary. This led to an intense backlash, particularly regarding his deployment of the National Guard, which sparked concerns among both lawmakers and military veterans about a rising authoritarianism.

However, just as controversies grew, he pivoted again—this time towards military actions against Iran following Israeli strikes. Rather than wait for public feedback on his decisions, he took immediate action, further redirecting the narrative without allowing time for debate or dissent.

Some supporters critiqued this militaristic approach, highlighting how it seemed reckless. Meanwhile, the administration attempted to misrepresent the threats posed by Iran, leading to even more confusion.

As questions about the effectiveness of his actions surfaced, Trump shifted focus back to his domestic agenda, prominently featuring an economic bill touted as a “one big beautiful invoice.” This big-ticket plan, filled with unpopular cuts, set its own deadline, again designed to stoke suspense and interest. In defending the bill, Trump made numerous claims that many analysts disputed, indicating that the situation and its implications were far more complex than presented.

What might Trump leverage to divert attention next? And will the media keep chasing the latest spectacle?
