Zohran Mamdani Pulled Away by Campaign Staff
Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s event in New York City took a sudden turn on Monday when campaign aides pulled him backstage, just as he was addressing reporters’ inquiries.
During the event, Mamdani had received the endorsement of the American Federation of Musicians, local 802. He fielded questions regarding former Governor Andrew Cuomo and noted that he intends to stay in the race as an independent candidate alongside House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
About 20 minutes after the event wrapped up, just as Mamdani was about to further engage with journalists, a staff member interjected, saying, “I think we’re done here. We’re leaving now, come on, we’re all set.”
Even with the assistant’s interruption, Mamdani lingered by the podium, smiling and listening to questions from the press. However, he was soon ushered off as the aide took him by the arm.
Mamdani’s Campaign Enters New Phase
Mamdani has been keeping a packed campaign agenda since winning the Democratic nomination last month. He has hosted several endorsement events involving the United Federation of Teachers and other local Democratic figures, inviting questions from reporters at these gatherings.
At just 33 years old, he plans to meet with fellow self-identified democratic socialists, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday. Ocasio-Cortez had earlier voiced her support for Mamdani ahead of his recent win.
During the Monday event, Mamdani also confirmed plans to meet with Jeffries later in the week, who indicated she would host him at her Brooklyn residence.
Despite having secured the nomination, Mamdani has not received backing from key House leaders so far.
“I’m looking forward to my conversation with Rep. Jeffries,” he mentioned, expressing his eagerness to collaborate with her.
