Trump on Peace Deal with Ukraine

On Monday, former President Trump hinted that First Lady Melania Trump believes Russian President Vladimir Putin remains committed to the idea of a peace agreement concerning Ukraine. This comment came during a meeting Trump held with NATO Executive Director Mark Latte, where he addressed the ongoing conflict.

Trump noted that his wife specifically referenced Putin’s previous false assurances following his call with the Russian leader, pushing for a resolution to the war. “You know, I spoke to Vladimir today. We had a great conversation,” he recounted Melania’s response, where she expressed concern about the situation, adding, “Oh, I was really attacked.”

He shared some conversations he had at home, suggesting a mix of optimism and confusion. “I sometimes go home and tell the First Lady, ‘I had three wonderful stories with Vladimir. I think we’re done.’ Then, it hits me; I either catch the news or she says, ‘They just bombed the nursing home, so that’s weird,’” he shared, clearly illustrating the stark contrast between his conversations and the realities of the war in Ukraine.

According to reports, Moscow has repeatedly targeted Ukraine with drone and missile strikes, especially following talks between Trump and Putin.

Last week, Trump expressed frustration with Putin, mentioning the significant loss of life resulting from the conflict. He also indicated that he is contemplating increasing support for Ukraine to resist further aggression from Russia. On Monday, he confirmed that Putin had agreed to sell arms to NATO, right after announcing a 50-day timeline to secure a peace deal with a “100%” tariff.

Latte remarked on the rising involvement of European nations in addressing the situation. He mentioned several countries, including Germany, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway, that are also engaged in discussions. “And this is just the first wave. There’s more,” he added, emphasizing the need to understand Ukrainian requirements through NATO’s framework.
