Kanye West expresses gratitude to the Chinese government following the issues at his Shanghai concert.

In a recent report, the Chinese state newspaper Global Times expressed disappointment following a concert by American rapper Kanye West in Shanghai, where he aimed to revitalize his career after a challenging period.

West expressed gratitude towards the Chinese government post-performance but did not address criticism from fans or state media.

Once a significant musical figure in the 2010s, West has faced a decline in support in the U.S., especially after his controversial shift from a Christian artist to one associated with problematic themes over the past decade. Following widespread backlash and the loss of business partnerships, he released a single titled “Heil Hitler.”

Interestingly, his actions have been received more favorably in China compared to the U.S., possibly reflecting a complex relationship shaped by his past experiences.

Saturday night’s concert was reported to be peaceful, contrasting with incidents earlier this month in Hainan Province. Since the beginning of 2023, West’s performances in China and South Korea have caught attention, although his slated appearance at a rap festival in Slovakia led to significant backlash, prompting its cancellation.

However, his recent show in Shanghai was marred by issues. Attendees became frustrated due to his late arrival, a lack of promised visual effects, and technical difficulties that affected the overall experience.

According to Global Times, West started the show 40 minutes late, leading the audience to chant for refunds even before the performance got underway. Reports indicated he had “minimal production” values, with elements disappearing unexpectedly throughout the night.

Footage shared online depicted a sparse stage setup with no backup dancers, amid challenges posed by rain affecting sound quality. Many in the crowd struggled to enjoy the music. Some fans communicated with Global Times, noting West sang a few songs but frequently left the stage, sparking speculation about wardrobe changes.

Online, some fans expressed disappointment, stating they’d never experienced such an ill-prepared concert. Despite promoters advertising innovative stage designs and upgraded sound, reality fell short of expectations.

Another media outlet, Shanghai Daily, criticized the performance too, highlighting complaints about the audio quality and showing clips that conveyed a dismal atmosphere.

Reports from various sources indicated that fans were dissatisfied with West’s tendency to lip-sync and for disappearing from the stage repeatedly, especially during an encore that left them waiting for over 20 minutes.

In the most favorable reviews, there were mentions of West performing songs with inflammatory lyrics, but it seemed some of his more provocative content was censored. Given China’s strict control over artistic expression, any positive remarks about Adolf Hitler could potentially lead to serious repercussions.

Despite the backlash, the promoter, Stellarambergroup, found themselves needing to apologize for the lackluster concert, stressing their commitment to prioritizing artist integrity.

In response, West did not issue any public apologies but thanked his fans and the Chinese government via a succinct post on his Twitter account. He ended on a hopeful note, expressing eagerness for future shows.
