Leonie Fiebich of Liberty is coming into her own

During the match on Sunday, Leonie Fiebich found herself with an open path to the basket after Breanna Stewart’s screen and a misstep from Allisha Gray. Without hesitation, she seized the opportunity and scored the Liberty’s first basket.

Later in the first quarter, Fiebich was intercepted, but quickly bounced back, contributing to her team. That quarter hinted at the type of game she was about to have.

Fiebich had a solid performance, racking up eight points in the first half and playing a crucial role in Liberty’s comeback in the third quarter, ultimately securing a 79-72 win. She ended the game with a career-high of 21 points, making 4 out of 5 from three-point range.

Just days earlier, she had also scored 15 points in a victory against the Aces. Her recent performances showcased a notable transformation; she confidently attacked the basket with determination.

Stewart had some praise for Fiebich, stating, “Leo has a deeper bag than the typical 3-and-D players, and you’re beginning to see that. It’s all about confidence for her.”

It’s worth remembering that this is just Fiebich’s second season in the WNBA. At 25, she plays like someone with far more experience.

Head coach Sandy Brondello sees greater potential in Fiebich, expressing admiration for her contributions. “I love Leo and everything about her approach. She plays unselfishly and we’ve urged her to take her shots, as she is incredibly talented at 6 feet 4,” Brondello remarked.

Fiebich, in her recent games, has been more aggressive in seeking her shots, influenced by coaches, teammates, and fans alike. She excels at creating space on the floor, allowing the ball to move fluidly when she’s on the court. Yet, her focus primarily lies on defense, engaging in less glamorous tasks that help her teammates shine.

“Honestly, I love defense; it’s about bothering my opponent,” Fiebich shared. “If I go into a game focusing solely on offense, I’m not always certain my shots will land. I know what my responsibilities are on the defensive side.”

Brondello and her staff don’t need to worry about Fiebich’s shot selection. The current aim is to bolster her confidence as a scorer.

Marine Johannes commented, “Everyone is thrilled when Leo plays with that energy. She consistently does the hard work, but tonight it was great to see her get shots off and feel comfortable on the court. I hope she keeps it up.”
