Republicans Lose Their Lead: GOP Pollster Discusses the Impact of Elon Musk’s America Party on the Midterms

Elon Musk’s New Political Party Could Impact GOP in Midterms

Kristen Saltis Anderson, a Republican pollster, discussed on CNN Monday how Elon Musk’s potential new American party might disrupt the Republican Party’s prospects in the upcoming midterm elections.

Musk has indicated his intent to create a third political party, claiming that the current system could lead the country to financial ruin due to waste and graft. During her appearance on “Arena,” Anderson mentioned that Musk’s venture could weaken the GOP’s current edge, potentially drawing enough voters away to alter the dynamics of key races.

“Interestingly, while we’ve focused on Musk’s actions, recent polling shows Republicans still slightly ahead when voters were asked about their preferences for the midterms,” Anderson noted. She also included a somewhat optimistic view about Republican prospects, even claiming, “I’ve been tracking this for over a year now.”

However, she pointed out that introducing the American Party complicates the situation significantly. “Once you add this new option, the Republican lead evaporates, with only a slight margin remaining,” she explained.

Anderson expressed concern that the GOP might struggle to mobilize its base during this election cycle, particularly emphasizing the challenge of voter turnout. While she mentioned that unhappy MAGA voters likely wouldn’t pivot towards the Democrats, they could either stay home or look elsewhere, ultimately harming GOP efforts.

“In a midterm where base turnout is crucial, losing any portion of your core support is not ideal,” Anderson stated. “I don’t foresee a significant number of MAGA supporters suddenly shifting to vote for Democrats.”

This cautionary note contrasts with her previous statements in June, where she acknowledged having misjudged Trump’s attractiveness to younger and minority voters. Recent data from Pew Research highlights his appeal, which caught Anderson by surprise.

“What surprises me is that someone like me, eight years ago, thought Trump would struggle to connect with young voters and voters of color, and yet he’s been more successful than I expected,” she admitted.
