Oregon Tax Return Reminder

The Oregon Department of Revenue is urging individuals who haven’t yet filed their 2024 tax returns, even those who received a six-month extension, to submit their returns as soon as possible.

While taxes were originally due on April 15, the midpoint for those granted an extension is Tuesday, July 15. The final deadline for filing remains October 15.

“July 15 is the halfway mark of the extended filing period, but if you haven’t submitted your taxes for 2024 yet, there’s really no reason to wait,” said Revenue Director David Gerstenfeld in a recent announcement.

The department noted that some individuals did not file by the April deadline due to financial constraints. But it’s important to understand that even with an extension, the clock is still ticking for interest and penalties, so it’s advisable to pay at least a portion of what is owed as soon as possible.

For those struggling to pay their tax bills in full, the state offers payment plans. “If you can’t pay the entire amount, don’t worry,” they suggest.

Additionally, there are others who missed the April 15 deadline due to various reasons—some found it hard to concentrate on tax matters, while others lacked necessary documentation. A few simply forgot to file.

As of this year, the state has processed over 2.05 million tax returns since April 15, which is about 98% of expected filings. However, around 150,000 taxpayers still haven’t filed.

Interestingly, some of these individuals may actually be entitled to refunds.

Taxpayers who haven’t filed yet can take advantage of free filing options, including the Direct File Oregon service. If there are any questions, they can call 503-378-4988 or 800-356-4222, with assistance available in both English and Spanish.
