Who is Anthony Bernal? First lady's close associate speaks on Biden's mental condition

House Oversight Committee Summons Anthony Bernal

The president of the House Oversight Committee, James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, has summoned Anthony Bernal, who serves as Jill Biden’s Chief of Staff. Bernal testified during a deposition on Wednesday.

Bernal had initially confirmed his attendance for an interview related to the committee’s investigation into allegations concerning the perceived mental decline of President Joe Biden and the possible misuse of authority regarding amnesty and other enforcement actions. However, after being informed by the White House legal team about a notice that waives enforcement privileges, he opted not to attend the interview.

Critics have suggested that Bernal, often referred to as Jill Biden’s “work husband,” is avoiding transparency about the President’s cognitive health issues and any efforts to cover them up.

Books Shed Light on Bernal’s Role

Recent publications focusing on the Biden administration provide intriguing insights into Bernal’s rise in political influence, which seems to align closely with Jill Biden. In one account, a long-time aide of the President claimed, “He’s not going to be welcome at my funeral.”

The authors also described Bernal’s loyalty, suggesting he uses it as a means to consolidate power and manage relationships within the White House. Some have noted that he has gained a reputation for being harsh towards colleagues, leading to speculation about the dynamics in the administration.

While certain former aides have pushed back against the claims made by authors Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson, stating that some narratives are exaggerated or misrepresented, the controversy continues to swirl around Bernal’s role and influence.

Contradictory Views on Bernal

In light of the criticism, a former member of the Democratic National Committee described Bernal as a highly effective leader, albeit cautious about how his views are sometimes presented. Another insider highlighted his proximity to the First Lady, suggesting that it was often unclear which opinions truly belonged to him versus those of Jill Biden.

Michael Larosa, who served as Jill Biden’s press secretary, noted that Bernal spent more time with the Biden family than most, illustrating his deep involvement in their lives and work.

As of now, neither Bernal nor representatives for the Bidens has commented on the matter or the ongoing scrutiny.
