Speaker Johnson Calls for Transparency on Epstein Statements

On Tuesday, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) expressed the need for the Justice Department to clarify its recent statement regarding Jeffrey Epstein.

This marks a notable divergence from President Trump, who has supported his attorney general and advised his followers to move on from the matter, while also affirming his trust in Johnson.

In an interview with conservative commentator Benny Johnson, the speaker discussed the case of Epstein’s former girlfriend, convicted of trafficking a minor.

“I’m all for transparency,” Johnson stated. “We’re trying to be consistent here. Remember when [President] Reagan faced similar scrutiny? We should trust the American people. I believe in that, and I’m confident Trump does too. He assembles his team, and they do solid work. It’s a sensitive topic, but we ought to lay everything out for the public to consider.”

“The White House has information I’m not privy to, so it’s not really my area. However, I agree with the sentiment that we need to be open about it,” he added.

Johnson brought up remarks made by Bondi, who claimed earlier this year on Fox News that Epstein’s client list was “sitting on my desk now for a review.” He noted that this has led to speculation about further disclosures, although Bondi clarified that this pertains to all Epstein files, not just specific client lists.

“She needs to come forward and explain everything,” Johnson urged. “I like Pam; she has done a good job. We need the DOJ to focus on important issues, like violent crime, public safety, and election integrity. Let’s resolve those, and then tackle this.”

Recently, the Department of Justice and the FBI released a statement regarding Epstein’s death, indicating that they didn’t intend to reveal a client list. They argued that disclosing more details might compromise victims’ safety and could wrongly implicate others in illegal activities.

This announcement outraged many conservatives who have long believed that Epstein’s situation involves a cover-up of influential crimes, hoping Trump would push for more information.

Typically aligned with Trump on major concerns, Johnson’s comments indicate a significant shift from the president’s stance. Trump has urged supporters to let go of the Epstein issue, dismissing it as a “made-up” story by Democrats and praising Bondi for her handling of the situation.

However, discontent within the conservative base remains, creating tension among Republicans.

“I’m ready to move on from this,” Johnson sighed. “We need to focus on more pressing matters,” reflecting on Congress’s priorities.

“What Epstein was involved in was pure evil. We must confront it both with words and actions,” Johnson stated emphatically.

“I trust the President. His intentions are good, and I have no doubt they’ll navigate this situation,” he concluded.
