Teenagers Arrested After Subway Surfing in NYC
On Thursday, police apprehended three teenagers and a 12-year-old boy in New York City following an episode of subway surfing captured by an NYPD drone. The drone footage, which was released to the public, shows the group, aged between 12 and 16, climbing the side of a moving northbound 6 Express Train as it traveled beneath the Westchester Avenue Bridge.
In the video, one of the minors can be seen standing up, joining others in a line, and jumping up and down while flailing their arms. It’s a scene that might have looked playful in a different context, but given the circumstances, it’s hard not to feel a sense of concern.
The NYPD’s Technical Assistance Unit Drone Team stumbled upon the incident while conducting surveillance for anti-subway surfing efforts. They provided descriptions and images of the boys to local district officials.
The train eventually came to a stop at Parkchester station in the Bronx, where authorities took the boys into custody. This arrest is a significant point in the ongoing attempts to manage subway surfing, which, while perhaps thrilling for the participants, poses serious risks.
A police spokesperson shared that this incident marks the 200th subway surfing case observed by drone teams since their usage began in November 2023. This initiative could potentially have saved numerous lives over the past months.
Reflecting on past tragedies, a 15-year-old boy lost his life in 2023 while subway surfing on a train crossing the Williamsburg Bridge. He was standing atop a northbound J train when he struck his head against the structure and fell, underscoring the dangers of this reckless behavior.
