John MacArthur Passes Away at 86

Rev. John MacArthur, the pastor of Grace Community Church in Los Angeles, California, has died at the age of 86, as reported by various sources.

In a post on X, MacArthur’s department stated that he has “entered the existence of the Savior.”

“Although our hearts are heavy, we are also filled with joy as we announce that our beloved pastor and teacher, John MacArthur, has entered the presence of the Savior,” the church shared. “Tonight, his faith became sight. He persevered until the end of his journey.”

The New York Times noted that MacArthur had “rejected a more accessible style of evangelical preaching that often relies on relatable stories and practical applications.” His approach to church growth countered established views on “seeker sensitivity,” which tends to attract non-teachers. Rather, MacArthur emphasized a preaching style focusing on biblical meanings and historical contexts, influencing countless conservative Protestant pastors through his seminary and sermons delivered via radio and online.

He was also known for “denouncing critical race theory” and emerged as a vocal Christian critic of certain social concepts.

Before joining Grace Community Church, MacArthur graduated from Talbot Seminary in 1969. During his tenure, the church’s two morning services expanded to accommodate 3,500 attendees.

After finishing his studies, he became involved with Grace Community Church, emphasizing careful biblical study and in-depth exploration of the scriptural text. Under his guidance, the church saw significant participation, with thousands attending fellowship groups and training programs each week, often led by dedicated leaders focused on fostering ministry at various levels.

He later took on the role of president at the Masters University (previously Los Angeles Baptist College) and established a master’s degree program. MacArthur authored numerous books, including According to Jesus, the Gospel, Our Sufficiency in Christ, Jesus’ Murder, and 12 Ordinary Men, among others.
